Water Balloons

Water balloons…what the heck does that have to do with what Alex is going through right now, you might ask.

Well, here’s how it unfolded:

I started the conversation with my boys about my upcoming surgery.  Initially, I just mentioned casually that I had to have an “operation”, and they didn’t seem that interested and didn’t ask any questions.  A week or two later, I mentioned it again, and THEN the questions started.

Oh boy, that was a BIG ole can of worms I just opened!

After some floundering, I boiled it down to this:  Mommy has some cells that aren’t growing the right way, so the doctors need to scoop out the bad stuff.  They both seemed to grasp this concept and were ok with it.

But then the questions about what I would look like after the surgery started: what’s going to be there?  Are you going to look different?  Is it going to be bloody all the time?  You name it, they threw it at me.

So the first thing that popped into my head was….water balloons.  The doctors are going to put water balloons in after they scoop out the bad stuff, so everything will look just the same!  I thought it was pretty clever for an off-the-cuff, spur-of-the-moment, talking-to-boys story.

And then this came home from daycare yesterday, compliments of our 5 year old, Chace:

There I am – in all my water balloon glory – for all the world to see.  And, of course, I’ve got a ponytail (Chace has a slight obsession with ponytails for those who don’t know).

From the mouths of babes, right?

Sigh.  And maybe a giggle or two.

  2. OMG I love this! I think of you every day Alex. If you and Austin need a weekend to yourself, I would love to take the boys and have a little sleep-over-boy-party-weekend! Cooper would love that and from what my Mom has mentioned the boys would get along great! Big hugs to you XOXO, Carrie

  3. Oh, I love it! And not only are you a brilliant off-the-cuffer, Chace is a brilliant artist. I’ll have to tell Sadie about the pony tail fixation. Knowing the way she feels about Chace, I may never see her hair flowing down around her shoulders again. – We are all thinking of you, Alex, and you are in our hearts and prayers. You are also such a strong lady. Wow. I think you could outrun and outwit any illness. Much love to you, sweetie.
